The Diary
Putting the patient in control.
A digital-health app and web platform that connected patients with their care providers. The patient’s whole health story sat on one page, so care could be built around the person instead of a five-minute appointment.
- Role
- Co-founder and CPO, 2011 to 2016
- Status
- Acquired: Sold in 2016; no longer available from me
- Availability
- Acquired by a health-tech firm in 2016.
Why it exists
My own family got subpar care. They would walk into a five-minute appointment carrying a diary of habits, diets, symptoms and daily notes, and none of it made it into their treatment. We digitised that diary and put it in front of the doctor.
What it does
- Patients kept habits, diet, symptoms, medications and documents in one place instead of a paper notebook.
- An iOS app with voice dictation, custom tracking, reminders, Apple Health and device sync, and document scanning.
- An Apple Watch app with care reminders and tap-and-talk health logging.
- The Diary CarePro for providers: the patient’s full health story on one page, built on Apple’s CareKit.
How we grew it
- Partnered directly with doctors’ offices, including the Integrative Pain Center of Arizona, where The Diary ran multi-provider patient rounds.
- Raised about $3.9M including a Series A, working directly with investors and the board.
- Grew the team from 4 to 12 and improved retention about 50% using customer feedback and usage data.
- Set up the 2016 acquisition by a health-tech firm, which returned capital to investors.
- iOS and Apple Watch
- HealthKit and CareKit
- Provider web platform
- Clinic partnerships
